1. What activities or situations can make your asthma worse? from B.S, a 14 year old High School student from NY
Great question! There are so many things that can make your asthma control worse, BUT, there are also many things you can do to make it better. Please read "Winning with Asthma", that will answer your question completely!
2. What percentage of asthma patients result from hereditary factors as opposed to outside circumstances? Also, is there an expected age range for the onset of asthma symptoms? from S.L. a 19 year old college student from N.Y.
The exact cause of asthma is unknown, but we believe that it is caused in most patients by a combination of hereditary factors and environmental or infectious triggers. The vast majority (about 80%) of children with asthma develop symptoms before the age of 6.
3. Do certain sports make asthma worse than others? from J.A. an 11 year old soccer and field hockey player from N.Y.
Yes, really intense sports that involve running such as: soccer, basketball, and track, as well as cold weather sports like cross-country skiing and ice hockey are more difficult than other sports for some children with asthma. But with the right treatment plan, and good asthma control, most children can play these sports too.
